The Russian military arrived in Sumy oblast on the first day of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine – the 24th of February 2022. There were no military personnel in the town of Trostyanets, which is just 50 kilometers away from Sumy, therefore it was impossible to resist.
For a month Trostyanets was under control of Russian troops, who shelled the neighboring Okhtyrka from there.
The occupants destroyed the central part of the city, the railway station and the local chocolate factory; they also arranged their headquarters in the building of the city council.
